Many have been eagerly awaiting the release of A Dog’s Purpose, a film based on the book of the same name by W. Bruce Cameron, which is supposed to tell a story of love and the powerful bond between dogs and their owners. However, the release of this movie has been tainted with a disturbing video release. The video, released January 17th, only ten days before the official release of the movie, shows a terrified German Shepherd being hurled into a pool of raging water and nearly dying.

In the movie, there is a scene where a dog is supposed to save someone from a raging canal. When it came time to shoot, the dog was terrified of the stormy canal, resisting when his trainer tried to put him in. Eventually, the trainer threw him in by his collar, where the dog was able to stay above the raging water. The pool being used had eight outboard motors which created the massive churning current. At one point the dog suddenly went under, and production rushed to turn off the power and rescue the dog.

The American Humane Society has now launched an investigation led by a private investigator, as well suspended the safety representative assigned to the film. PETA has asked people to boycott the film, stating that BAU, the animal supplier who provided the animals, treats their animals inhumanely, they said, “[The dogs] are denied veterinary care, forced to sleep outdoor in the cold without bedding for warmth, made to live in filthy conditions and more.”. The director, Lasse Hallström, has responded by claiming that he was shaken by the footage and never witnessed anything other than respect and compassion directed towards all of the animals featured in the film. He remains firm that he was unaware of the actions in this video. See what you think, watch the video below.
