From March 29 to April 1, the Edison Tiger Theatre Company will be debuting its big spring play. In the fall, the club’s website announced that the chosen play would be the Broadway musical, Hairspray. The original Hairspray opened on Broadway in 2002. The following year, it went on to win eight Tony awards out of thirteen nominations. The musical held 2,500 performances and ran until 2009. In 2007, the musical was adapted into a film starring Nikki Blonksy and Zac Efron.

Hairspray takes place in the dazzling city of Baltimore during the 1960s, a time of modernization and transitioning music. The protagonist, a plump, spunky teenager named Tracy Turnblad, becomes a dancer on The Corny Collins Show, a hip TV show. Her provocative moves, large personality, and social views spice up the once squeaky-clean show. The musical begins to pick up when she sparks a romance with pretty boy Link Larkin and begins to advocate for racial integration on television.

In ETTC’s production, the female lead of Tracy Turnblad will be played by Ollie Wagner (12) and the male lead of Link Larkin will be played by Jordi Aparino (12). Other key roles include Wilbur Turnblad, Sixto Maldonado (12); Edna Turnblad, Gilberto Guzman (12); Corny Collins, Adam Dueck (12); Seaweed J. Stubs, Patrick Hamilton (12); Motormouth Maybelle, Ifeanyi Nwonye (11); and Penny Pingleton, Elizabeth Aguilera (11). Other members of ETTC take part in  several large dance numbers that take place throughout the show.

Hairspray will be open to audiences for a total of three nights. The prices have not been specified yet. For more information, visit the Edison Tiger Theatre Company’s website at http://tigertheatre.weebly.com/ or talk to Ms. Ankrum, the theatre teacher, in D-102.
