McDonalds, the nation’s favorite chicken nugget joint, has come too far into the 21st century with their stereotypical, gender segregated Happy Meal toys.

Take a walk down memory lane to a simpler time, a time of adolescence. You walk into a McDonald’s. The smell of French fries drifts to your nose and you run to the jungle gym to climb as high as you can before the meal arrives. Your parents call you down and tell you that you can have the toy after you eat your Happy Meal. You scarf down all your nuggets and dip every french fry in ketchup, savoring the saltiness. Finally you are all done and you begin tearing open the plastic encasing your toy. You are at the height of your 7-year-old life, but suddenly, you are filled with utter disappointment. The toy is a candy-heart box filled with “cherry lip gloss”! You run over to the display and look at the other toys. It is divided into two sections displaying two types of toys. You scan the display and realize there is a whole section of toys different from what you got. You go back to your seat and look at your brother’s toy, wishing you were a boy so that you could have gotten the “boy” toy. And you go home thinking. Wow. Being 7 is rough.

All McDonald’s have segregated toys. Yes, sometimes they have one type of toy for both boys and girls, but typically they do not. People tend to be conditioned to think that cars are boys’ toys and dolls are girls’ toys,  but everyone is different. There are girls who play with cars and boys who play with Barbies, so why assume what

A little girl should not have to say, “Mom, can you say the Happy Meal is for a boy? I want that toy.” McDonald’s needs to jump into 2017 gender-neutral. Nothing gives them the right to assume a child’s desired toy.
