On January 26, it was announced that tuition hikes for University of California colleges have been approved for all 10 campuses. This would be the first tuition increase in six years. The tuition prices have increased, creating an overall fee of about $11,000-12,500, and many students who are planning to attend these UC colleges are definitely not thrilled about it.

Many arguments have been made as to whether the tuition hike is harmful or beneficial. UC spokeswoman Dianne Klein has said that the increase would be helpful as it would benefit students by helping in covering financial aid. Some other examples of how it could help would be that the money would be used so that the UC system would be able to hire more faculty staff to lower classroom sizes, pay for counselors, tutors, graduate-student fellowships, etc. It would also help to bring more courses to students.

However, students have strongly opposed the hike, with many saying that the current tuition is already hard to afford as is. A the San Francisco campus, student protests disrupted a meeting. Many carried signs, chanting “We are the Agenda!” to strongly voice their opposition.

The suggestion of the hike has led people to wonder whether or not this would truly be beneficial. It has caused the rise of protests from college students, and concern from high school students who aim to attend one of the nine UC schools. However, despite the fiery response from college students, reports say that it is still likely that the UC Board of Regents will approve the hike in order to “invest more in core student services and academic excellence.”
