Want to Drive?

How to get started

Nicole Wong, Staff Writer

Teenagers want to drive earlier these days and need guides and tips in order to get their license on their first try. Here are some basic requirements needed for you, for your first step in getting your license successfully.

  1. Proof of identity–such as your ID card or birth certificate
  2. Physical Proof of your SSN(social security number), needed for the application at the California DMV
  3. Two residency documents–such as medical documents, court documents, or insurance documents
  4. $36 for the California DMV– original Class C license
  5. Drivers’ education complete certificate (some in high school will be able to get a free DMV class that is around half a semester-long)
  6. Current proof of registration and insurance
  7. Signed permit, if you are under 18 (practice tests online or have someone test you to ensure you for passing your permit test)

What To Not Do:

  • Do not provide photocopies, self-laminated cards, or documents
  • Go according to the laws, don’t drive others when you are not old enough yet
  • Do not put other people in danger.
  • Leave your license and important information at home.
