Stay Chill (in the heat)

Summer! What most of us count down to as the school year ends. With summer also comes vacations, relaxation, and most importantly hot temperatures. Whether you like summer or not, we can all agree on one thing: It is too darn hot. Especially in the Central Valley where the temperature can reach over a hundred degrees. So, no matter whether you are staying home or vacationing this summer, it is important to stay cool. How may you ask? Glad you did.  

  • Keep hydrated with water. 

Now this may seem like a no-brainer, but I have seen way too many people walking out on a hot sunny day without any source of water. Always remember to keep a bottle of water with you, even better if you have a bottle that can keep your water nice and cold. Also, it is best if you drink water instead of soda or other similar drinks since water is the undefeated campion in keeping you hydrated. Water is calorie-free, hydrating and the benefits are many. Soda is loaded with sugar and calories but does nothing for your health.  

  • Wear sunscreen, at all times. 

I have heard this excuse a hundred times. “I don’t need sunscreen. I’ll be fine.” No, you won’t! Everyone, including those with dark skin, need to wear sunscreen every day. Regardless of skin color, you will still burn and are still susceptible to sun-induced damage such as sunspots, wrinkles and even cancer. Skin cancer is no joke! So please remember to protect your skin while being out in the sun. We get one body, and we must take care of it.  

  • Take lukewarm showers. 

Yes, I know how that sounds. Who would want to take a warm shower on a hot day but hear me out? Taking a cold shower on a hot day may seem relaxing and comforting, but scientists suggest that this makes you feel even hotter. That’s because when you take a cool shower your body has to work harder to warm up again. Studies suggest that warm water cools your bloodstream. So, opting for it is a better option.  

  • Eat cool, be cool. 

We all have different food preferences and appetites, but I recommend that you consume foods that are cooling to your internal systems. Go for sweet and refreshing summer fruits, fresh veggies, and foods that are bitter rather than salty or spicy. A fun idea is to make homemade popsicles and frozen fruits for your weekend adventures. 

  • Make sure to chill.  

Make sure to get plenty of rest this summer. We have had a few rough years recently so make sure to take it easy this summer. Find a stream to dip in, read a book in the shade, take a walk in the park, or do whatever you want as long as you can keep cool.
