In its most visualized state, the wall that Mr. Trump appears to be asking for, is not worth it. Mr Trump seeks $5.7 billion to fund a wall along the southern border. Mr. Trump aims to reduce illegal immigration, something that I haven’t a problem with, and I agree we need to have secure borders. The wall he seeks however, is not the answer. During his State of the Union speech, Trump justified his request with a depiction of our border as the wild west, full of lawlessness and danger. While this is partly true, most illegal immigrant come into the United States legally, and overstay their visas. The drugs he talked about? They mostly get snucked through legfitimate checkkopoints. Building a wall along in a desolate desert won’t do much to stop drug trafficking. What we need is mix of technology and physical methods to control our border. A wall won’t stop a tire full of cocaine from driving through Tijuana, but technology might. A wall won’t stop someone underground, but a sensor could detect them and alert border security. Technology can only do so much, and thus some physical barriers are also needed, concentrating in heavily populated areas. Technology can take care of the few out in the desert, let the wall allow border patrol to focus on the real threats in our checkpoints. They must be used in tandem for a efficient and effective border. In today’s world, we need a high tech border that combines all worthy methods, and not just a 30 foot high wall.
