This second week of Premier League soccer was kicked off on Friday with Nottingham Forest defeating newly promoted side Sheffield United in a 2g-1 win that saw Chris Wood heading in a winner in the 89th minute to give his side their first points of the season.
On Saturday, Liverpool put 3 past Bournemouth who grabbed the lead 3 minutes into the first half through Antonie Semenyo. However, Liverpool’s star-studded attack proved too much as Luiz Diaz equalized spectacularly and Salah, missed a penalty but tapped home the rebound, to give Liverpool the lead as Diogo Jota hit home the third. But not everyone was all smiles in the Liverpool squad after summer signing Alexis McAllister earned himself a red card in the 58th minute after a late challenge.
Over in Wolverhampton, the Wolves were dismantled 4-1 at home by De Zerbi’s Brighton, as Japanese striker Kaoru Mitoma scored the team’s first goal of 4 after a terrific solo run. He went on to assist Estupiñán and Solly March, who scored twice, as Wolves got themselves some consolation through a goal in the 61st minute, only for Matheus Nunes to lose his temper and get sent off in the 90th minute.
Elsewhere, Brentford blew away Fulham in a convincing 3-0 win and Unai Emery’s revamped Aston Villa butchered a sorry Everton 4-0 who look like they will finally exit the Premier League this season.
At Tottenham Stadium, the highly anticipated meeting of Manchester United and Tottenham ended in a 2-0 win for the hosts. United’s side were riddled with poor performances from Antony and Garnacho most notably and a missed open header by Bruno Fernandes. Tottenham broke the deadlock in the 49th minute through 20-year-old Pape Matar Sarr, and an own goal by Lisandro Martinez finally put the game to bed. This win is new manager, Ange Postecoglou, first of the season.
Over in the Etihad Stadium, in a match between two Saudi-funded teams, Manchester City clawed out a 1-0 win against Newcastle United, thanks to a magnificent strike by Julian Alvarez in the 31st minute which found its way into the top left corner. Stand-out Erling Haaland was kept off the scoresheet. City retains their perfect record as they seek four straight premier league titles.
In London, two rivals went head to head, as West Ham pulled off a miraculous 3-1 win against an unrecognizable Chelsea side, despite being down to 10 men (Nayef Aguerd in the 67th minute). Nayef Aguerd would score in the 7th minute for West Ham (got sent off 60 minutes later though), while 19-year-old Chukwuemeka equalized with his first Chelsea goal in the 28th minute, and in the 43rd minute, a penalty was awarded to Chelsea. 132 million dollar man, Enzo Fernandez stepped up to put his team ahead and missed. However, in the 58th minute, West Ham fan favorite Michail Antonio, out-muscled his defender (Disasi) and hit an absolute missile into the bottom left corner. In the 61st minute, 146 million dollar man Moises Caicedo stepped onto the pitch for his Chelsea debut. In the 90th minute, 146 million dollar man Moises Caicedo conceded a penalty and Paquetá slotted it home to put West Ham up 2. 178 million dollars for a missed penalty and one given away, not much more to say.
On Monday, Arsenal scraped away with a win 1-0 vs Crystal Palace despite being down a man thanks to Tomiyasu getting his second yellow of the game in the 67th minute. However, team captain Martin Ødegaard, put his penalty away which was enough to give his team the 3 points as they continued their title charge.
