As Summer ends students are coming back to school, and they are hungry. Most days the lunch lines are long, with students having you wait a minimum of 7-9 minutes. Everyone has had some experience with school food before. Students have a variety of food choices like whole grains, milk, fruits, or vegetables.
Students are split on the quality and flavor of the food offered at Edison.
Adrian M. a junior at Edison was overheard saying, “This peperoni pizza tastes like cardboard.” While Jacob, a junior, commented, “This meat is red[raw]”.
However, not all students are critical, Brandon C mentioned, “The chicken sandwich is smacking”.
Although the food on campus is not as appetizing as some students may expect, the students who participate in the school meal plan consume more nutrients than those who don’t.
The food Edison provides comes through the USDA meals program which offers a variety of different foods to meet students’ nutritional needs. Marisa Garcia de Herrera, the school’s head chef, explained, “The food that the school gets is from the nutrition center, a company that provides it for them is Sysco. Sysco sends us curly fries, cheese, hot dogs, and sun chips. Vegetables come twice a week, and bread comes every week. We also have a warehouse that keeps the patties, chicken, and spaghetti.”
While some students don’t find the food flavorful, Edison offers many choices so students can find something that they like while getting the nutrition they need.
