Coming off of their first win of the season, the Tigers looked to go back-to-back as they hosted the Clovis West Golden Eagles last Friday. The game began as the sun was setting, and both sides of the stadium were packed with loud fans. Edison and Clovis West has always been a rivalry game, so there is a lot of energy on both sides.
The first quarter could not have gone worse for Edison, as the Eagles scored 2 touchdowns on long pass plays. The second quarter wasn’t very different, as CW scored another 3 times, all passing touchdowns from quarterback Tyler Patrick. West lead 35-0 at half.
Returning from halftime, the Tigers came out very motivated, as they stopped the Golden Eagles for the first time on defense. Their ensuing drive became very long, going into the start of the 4th quarter. Edison kicker Robert Perez was roughed on a field goal attempt, keeping the drive alive for quarterback Phoenix Lawrence to run the ball in and score.
Due to the high score, there was a running clock the entire 4th quarter. The game concluded with the Tigers losing by a score of 35-6. The momentum seemed to have shifted in the Tigers’ favor during the second half, but there was not enough time left to complete the comeback.
Some notable player performances include Lawrence going 15 for 22 on the day with a rushing touchdown and junior receiver Dezjour Malone catching 4 passes for 44 yards. The Eagles’ passing attack proved to be too much for the Tigers’ defense in the first half. In the second half, however, Clovis West’s offense was stopped, and Edison managed to punch one in to break their shutout.
Edison looks to capitalize on the momentum gained in the second half next week, as they host Bakersfield High at Sunnyside stadium. The regional night game will kick off at 7:30 p.m.
