Leave the World Behind is a 2023 American apocalyptic psychological thriller film written and directed by Sam Esmail. Based on the 2020 novel by Rumaan Alam. Film stars include Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, Ethan Hawke, Myha’la, and Kevin Bacon as they attempt to make sense of the sequential rapid breakdown in phones, television, and other regularly used technology which points to a potential cataclysm.
The beginning of the movie starts with a couple deciding to go on vacation and an intro plays, the intro is a cool 3d and 2d mixture and gives an impression of the movie on what it may be about. The first beginning parts of the movie give off a good impression of the movie.
The couple with their two kids go on vacation to a small town, Archie and Ruse, go to the beach, and while on the beach Ruse notices a boat from a distance, the family shrugs it off as unimportant. Later, the boat comes closer to the beach and the family still brushes it off. Ruse tells the family once again that the boat that is directly heading towards them tells them it’s closer, the dad says it has to stop but it cant stop in time, it is an oil tank boat. It takes the family such a long time to realize an Oil tank boat is heading in their direction and finally start running off in the other direction once the boat crashes onto the beach shore.
In most of the movie, all they do is talk in a low voice and talk and talk, it says it is a thriller movie but there is no thrill other than the incidents that involve the attack on the town and the rest of America, small scenes no more than 10 minutes of thrills. The plot has a great plot although it was just 80% talking and 20% of plot, its like the movie was telling you to decide what the plot should be, they are making you want to guess the plot. The somewhat of a good plot involves the rich saving their selves when it comes it a terrorist attack or the end of the world scenario, in a scenario like that the rich would gladly pay that amount of money to save themselves which represents in the class in our modern world, the rich will save the rich and the poor will die.
The daughter of the rental place, Ruth, has this snobby know-it-all attitude, this may be because she is a teenager and all her mother does is complain and complain and not let others talk and has a big mouth. There is no drama in this movie the only drama is there is the attitudes of the characters.
The ending is horrible, one of the worst endings I have seen ever, the ending does not reach any sort of conclusion.
Often some movies based on novels can often be a terrible recreation of a movie and I assume this falls into that category.
