The tradition of the new year’s resolution came as early as 2000 B.C., the Babylonians celebrated the New Year during a 12-day festival called Akitu, this started with promises to do better for each new year.
Every New Year’s Day most people start with a resolution on how they want to improve about themselves or what new hobbies they want to learn. Why New Year’s though? Couldn’t people just do it later in the month? It is more common to do it on New Year’s Day because it gives people a fresh new year and a starting point of time to the resolution.
What are the New Year’s resolutions for the Edison tigers? I asked the staff members and the students here at Edison what their New Year’s resolution is and what they are expecting for the new year to get to the heart of the issue.
Natalie Sanchez, Senior, says “My resolution for this year is to start being more productive with my time and make new friends by joining a bunch of clubs when I go to community college. I do plan to play sports and be active in the community.” Her expectations of the new year include, ‘Getting things done on time and start living in a calming environment where it’s peaceful and with problems that are easily resolved.”
Mrs. Chirino, a math teacher, says, “For my New Year’s resolutions I want to change my habits like drinking more water. I want to spend less time on the screen, and focus more on my students.” Her hope for this year includes, “finishing my projects and working on myself more. Work is good for me, I want more students to have better grades for this semester.”
Kaili Barajas, Senior, says, “For my new resolutions I would like to improve myself mentally and physically, I want to do better in my classes. Last semester I was decent but this year, is the last year for me and I want to do better than before. Hopefully, I can improve this year.” Kaili’s expectations for the new year are, “I feel as if this year is going to be 50/50, 50 percent good and 50 percent bad.”
